"Bard of the Streetcar"

To honor five years as poet-in-residence for Art All Night H street:

Bard of the Streetcar

We are transported. Up and down H Street, Washington, DC.

It’s 8:00 pm. The last Saturday of September.

We are transported. Up and down

the Rue de Seine.        It could be broad daylight.

On an old shale logging road.

Toward the lions         of the New York Public Library

And here are two sling-back chairs, one for you

… be my companion.

It’s “Art All Night.” Poetry on the streetcar.

A room with a courtyard and easy transport

Up and down H Street.

Circling the ancestors’ wholly baked faith

… over the streets past the cars out of the city to the sea.

Poetry in Transit

Encore! I will be giving a poetry reading on the DC streetcar for Art All Night H Street, September 28 at 8:00 pm. Hop on! Be transported, literally and figuratively. A surprise guest is joining me for sound healing on our ride. This will be sublime, with occasional rhyme.

Cheers,
Charise

Nothing But Thanks

The kindness of people who don't even know they are walking into a poetry reading when they enter a streetcar is downright incredible. Thanks to passengers who listened intently and thanked me as they exited!

We had some finger snapping going on at the close of certain poems––ones that hit a chord, that were especially liked. My voice was hoarse and heart full.

Cheers to unexpected art
& poetry in communal places!

Your H Street Art All Night poet-in-residence,
Charise

Poetry in Locomotion

It's that time of year, and DC is getting ready to celebrate the arts. I'm thrilled to be joining this event for the fourth go-around, sharing poetry with fellow riders of the streetcar. This is, literally, poetry in motion... or locomotion.

You can catch as little or as much as you like
of "Let's Go Poetry!" from 8:00 to 9:00 pm September 30 while riding DC's streetcar on H Street.

Thank you to the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities for supporting local artists.

Cheers,
Charise

Streetcar & Stage

These photos, taken a week apart, show how related the two arts of dance and poetry really are. I could say more about this, but the images speak clearly. One is from a streetcar poetry reading for Art All Night H Street, DC and the other is from a performance for "The Power and the Voice of Women in Dance through the Millennia."

Scenes from the Streetcar

We carried poetry books,

a singing bowl, and an ocean drum,

as the streetcar carried us

up and down H street

for Art All Night DC.

How fun to be in-person to share these offerings!

Thanks to those who hung out with us

in the Poetry & Sound space

for a little while.

May your travels hold more light-hearted moments...

Warm wishes,
Charise (and Jeneen)

Poetry Performance by Streetcar

Catch the streetcar and catch the poetry performance "Charise & Seema: We Mean It."
I'm delighted to team up with the poet Seema Reza to read our poems on a moving streetcar,
8:00 to 9:00 pm this Saturday, September 14, for Art All Night on H Street, Washington, DC.
I'll be bringing a tambourine and some dance moves for this festive evening!
