Once Upon a Fool Moon

A lover’s plight, a sorry night.

Candle’s wicked flame will not wane

for none of this can we explain.

Except by a fool moon insight:

a spell devised to fake the light,

bedim the way, wedlock belie.

Faltering where rings unwind by

sleight of hand, by wringing of heart.

He steps aside… she’s in the dark,

extinguished as he turns his eye.
